Q: How is RTT different from other types of hypnotherapy?

A: RTT does what it says on the tin: it’s rapid and it’s transformational. Many other hypnotherapy modalities require multiple sessions over a period of weeks or months before the client starts to see any benefit or make progress. However, RTT can often help a client after just one session. For some deeper rooted problems or where more than one problem requires attention, then a further one or two sessions may be required. Whether to have a further session is entirely up to the client.

Q: Will I lose control?

A: Hypnosis is used to help access the subconscious mind. We’ve all had occasions when we’ve driven home from work and then realised we can’t remember the last ten minutes of the journey – that’s because we’ve entered the alpha state, which is the same state we go into when in hypnosis. You are still in complete control and have your full faculties. 

Q: Will hypnotherapy have any long lasting effects?

A: Hypnosis itself will not cause any long lasting effects as coming out of it is much like waking up. In terms of the therapy itself, the aim is to provide beneficial, transformative and long lasting effects. The therapist wants to help the client improve their quality of life and/or overcome the obstacles standing in the way of their best life. 

Q: Is it safe?

A: So long as the client has been honest about pre-existing conditions including epilepsy and psychosis (which are contra-indicated) and has declared any suicidal or deep trauma events so that the therapist is confident they are working within the scope of their experience and capabilities, then hypnosis is safe. A therapist’s mantra is ‘first do no harm’. 

Q: How does it feel to be hypnotised?

A: Being hypnotised is like being in a deeply relaxed state. The feeling is similar to those moments before drifting off to sleep. 

Q: I don’t want to be humiliated like I’ve seen with stage hypnosis, will it be like that?

A: No, absolutely not! Stage hypnosis is done not for the benefit of the individual but for the audience’s enjoyment. The main thing to remember is that in hypnotherapy – the key word is “therapy” ie it is designed to help the client, certainly not to humiliate. Also the sessions are conducted in a private setting with complete confidentiality, compassion and empathy.

Q: Can someone be hypnotised without their knowledge?

A: No. Hypnosis is a consensual process. Nobody can be hypnotised without their full knowledge, agreement and willing participation. Hypnotherapy requires the client to trust the therapist.

Q: How do you put someone into hypnosis?

A: It’s a simple process where the client is requested to roll their eyes up as if they were looking into their own eyebrows and to hold that for three breaths before closing their eyes and relaxing them. The client is then taken through some exercises to help them to enter a deeper hypnotic state. The process takes about five minutes. 

Q: What happens before a session?

A: Before a session, I will spend time with the client asking a series of questions to understand the effect the issue they want to deal with has on their lives, about their childhood and significant life experiences, and about what they would like their life to be like. The conversation is designed to help set the client up for success. 

Q: What happens during a session?

A: During the session I will usually guide a client to childhood scenes that relate to the problem they wish to overcome to help them understand the belief they developed about themselves. I then help the client to let go, use some therapeutic techniques including a reframe, and then do a transformation. The transformation is created using the information provided by the client about what their life would be like without the problem and is recorded so that the client continues to listen to it for a minimum of 21 days. 

A session would usually last 1 ½ to 2 hours.

Q: What happens after a session?

A: After a session, the client is required to listen to the recording for  a minimum of 21 days. This is because the subconscious mind learns by repetition and we are working to create new neural pathways so that the old unhelpful reactions to events in our lives are eradicated and new helpful and positive beliefs, thoughts and behaviours are created. 

I will check in with you within 24 hours after the session and then weekly until 21 days after the session, when I will have a half hour follow up call with you to see how you are doing. If a further session is required, it would be discussed at this point. 

Q: How long will it take to notice a difference?

A: Everyone is different. Some people feel an effect almost immediately while others will notice an incremental or retrospective difference. The critical thing is to keep listening to the recording even if you feel like it’s not helping. 

Q: What if I live a distance away and can’t come to see you?

A: No problem. Hypnotherapy is just as effective online as it is face to face so long as the therapist can see the client throughout the session. I use zoom for the session, so as long as you have a computer, a tablet or a smartphone, we can make it work. You do not need to download any apps or software, all instructions are provided.  

Q: What should I expect from an in-person session?

For an in-person session, I could either come to you or you could come to me. The critical thing is to ensure a safe, warm, comfortable space is provided where there will be no interruptions or distractions.  

Q: Is there anything special I need to do to prepare for a session?

A: Yes. For online sessions, you need to make sure that you can create a space which is warm, comfortable and free from interruptions/disturbances. Wear comfortable clothing and try to make sure you don’t have any taxing commitments immediately after the session or for the remainder of the day. Some people find the sessions emotionally draining, feel quite tired and benefit from having time to process afterwards. 

Q: How much does it cost?

A hypnotherapy/RTT package would include a first session, which includes the pre-session discussion, the session itself and the check-ins/follow-up after 21 days. At this point, you can decide whether a follow up session would be beneficial.
